Three finalists to the European Mobility Award!
The European Coordination has the pleasure of announcing the eleven European local authorities shortlisted for the European Mobility Week Award 2009!

The Award rewards the local authorities judged to have made the biggest efforts to raise awareness of sustainable travel and implemented innovative projects supporting a complete shift towards sustainable urban mobility during the eight annual edition of European Mobility Week (EMW), which took place from 16-22 September 2009.

The Award winner will be officially announced by Mr. Janez Potočnik, the European Commissioner for the Environment, at a prestigious ceremony taking place at the Musée du Cinquantenaire in Brussels on 23 March 2010 during the EU–Sustainable Energy Week. The ceremony forms part of a two-day event for national and local coordinators of European Mobility Week which also includes an interactive workshop offering informal networking and knowledge exchange and training on social media tools.

The eleven shortlisted cities are:

The EMW 2009 focal theme was ‘Improving City Climates’ which offered local authorities the opportunity to highlight their efforts to tackle climate change at local level and improve quality of life through the promotion of alternative transport modes to the car such as cycling, walking, and public transport, as well as clever car use schemes such car-sharing and car-pooling.

Note on selection procedure

The European Coordination received a total of 40 Award applications from 13 different European countries. Of the 29 applications which passed the eligibility check, 11 excellent applications were selected for the Award shortlist by the Award jury comprising four independent transport experts (Ms. Heather Allen, UITP; Professor Tom Rye, Napier University; Mr. Dudley Curtis, Transport and Environment and Ms. Ilse Vleugels, Mobiel 21) at a meeting on 18 January in Brussels presided over by Mr. Philip Owen, Director Clean Air & Transport Unit, DG Environment, European Commission. From these 11 applications, the jury distinguished three outstanding applications (the “best of the best”) which were named as the finalists for the EMW Award 2009.
