Under the ‘Improving City Climates’ theme, highlighting the key role that local authorities can play in tackling climate change at local level, activities and events during the Week ranged from three Car Free Days in downtown Budapest, transforming its iconic Andrássy Avenue into a ‘Living Street’ festival; canoe trips, guided walks and a roller-blade race in Murcia highlighting the benefits of active travel; and a ‘commuter challenge’ in Gothenburg involving hundreds of city employers which extensively promoted sustainable travel to their employees during the Week.
The media response to the campaign was largely positive, with hundreds of press articles featuring EMW activities and permanent measures collected by the European Coordination. EMW also featured prominently in popular social media sites such as You Tube and Twitter and was even the subject of a short blog post in the New York Times!
Participating cities are reminded that the deadline to apply for the EMW Award 2009 is 1 November. Please check your eligibility and download the application form here.
A big thank you to all national and local coordinators for all their hard work. Roll on EMW 2010!
