European Mobility Week in Brno (CZ)
From the 16th to the 22nd of September, Brno will organise the European Mobility Week with the aim to emphasis healthy movement in the city through various activities.

During the campaign of the European Mobility Week the Brno citizens will put on roller-skates and jumping stilts, which are popular among young people. Series of roller-skates and roller-skate courses will be held in streets commonly used by cars, including the area around the shopping centre. Hundreds of Brno citizens will be able to ride through the city within the roller-skates city ride which will end in the evening by a roller-skate party.

Participants will also have the opportunity to get Nordic Walking sticks as well as to do physical exercise in a new outdoor park under the city castle when walking through the city. In short, Brno will forget about cars and use other means of transport. The second largest city in the Czech Republic also considers cyclists options. They can enjoy new cycle lanes, which were constructed this year and connected with the existing network. As the city is well underway with building up new cycle tracks, the European Mobility Week helps to gain public support to enlarge the space for bike traffic in the city. Tourists will also find new attractions in Brno: they will be able to use segways – two-wheeled vehicles driven by electric motor – to move in the streets of the city centre. Besides, competitions and games will be held on bicycle safety for children and young people.

Here are the main activities in Brno for the 2010 event:

  • Whole week programme in the city centre square where will be the information stand, giving to public the information about the European Mobility Week programme as well as about various alternative modes of transport, including their presentations.
  • Roller-skating city rides throughout the city accompanied with roller-skate courses.
  • Nordic Walking courses and the series of walks in the city with open air music performances and guided tours in city parks.
  • Workshop about the pedestrians’ needs in the city; lecture about car-sharing, an alternative way of owning and using cars.
  • Educational programmes at schools about prevention of road traffic injuries, safe walking and cycling in the city.

This year, the City also implemented the following permanent measures:

  • Creation of cycle lanes in existing networks and contribution to the reallocation of transport space in behalf of cyclists.
  • Reconstruction of squares in the city centre, focused on the enlargement of pedestrian areas and the creation of new relaxing areas.
  • Building of the “Information Mobility Centre”, giving to Brno citizens and visitors information about public transport in the city and the whole region.
  • Elaboration of a “General Bicycle Traffic Plan”, which includes an interactive map available on the City of Brno website.
  • Elaboration of a “General Pedestrian Traffic Plan” that also includes publishing maps of footways in the city, aiming to promote walking in the city.
