Leave your car at home - says Housewives Association from Arenas de San Pedro (ES)
Together with the expansion of large shopping centres, new kinds of transportation problems have arisen. Overloaded parking lots and huge road traffic around main shopping areas are characteristic not only for large municipalities, but also for smaller towns. Having this in mind, members of Triste Condesa Housewives Association from the Spanish municipality of Arenas de San Pedro decided to take matters into their own hands and encourage other inhabitants of their city to do their shopping in a more eco-friendly way !

The action took place as part of this year’s Car Free Day. Apart from inviting all citizens of Arenas de San Pedro to go shopping without a car, members of Triste Condesa Housewives Association sought to demonstrate how useful this might be for all of us to use our own shopping cart (as the one shown on the picture) while going to a supermarket.

First, we do not have to carry our shopping in single-use plastic bags, and second, it is easier to take advantage of the public transportation with all the items in just one bag.

To spread the word about the action, members of the Association put some model shopping carts in all supermarkets of the municipality, together with a poster saying : “This is the best vehicle to take your shopping home. It doesn’t need fuel, it doesn’t pollute and it is cheap. Cheer to use it !”

Initiative of the Housewives Association is one of great examples of actions taken in smaller municipalities during this year’s European Mobility Week. Apart from Arenas de San Pedro (7.000 inhabitants), other small towns and cities in Spain were also involved in the campaign.

Among them were the municipality of San Juan de Aznalfarache (about 20.000 inhabitants), where sails along the river in catamaran were organized, and the municipality of Almendralejo (population of about 30.000), where “Move Together” exhibition had been set up.
