In town, without my car! day is one of the many efforts put in place by the Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) to raise public awareness on the importance of using active transportation and public transit and on the need for sustainable mobility to ensure a better quality of urban life.
Over the years, In town without my car! day has turned into a big urban party, offering to citizens the opportunity to rediscover their downtown. This year again, more than 50 000 people are expected for this sustainable mobility celebration.
The seventh edition of ’’In town, without my car day!’’ will take place on Tuesday, September 22, 2009. The perimeter bounded by McGill College and Saint-Urbain streets, and René-Lévesque and De Maisonneuve boulevards, will be closed to car traffic from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is one of the largest downtown areas in North America that is entirely closed to car traffic. In addition, the stretch of Sainte-Catherine Street between Jeanne-Mance and Saint-Urbain streets will be closed from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on September 22 so certain planned activities can be held there, such as the Extreme Zone.
THEME: “CAR FREE CITY!”
This year, AMT is creating a futuristic town where cars are forbidden. In this car free city, you will find a school where people can learn more about sustainable mobility (carpooling, public transit passes provided as an employee benefit, self-serve bikes, etc.), the city hall, the business quarter where a popular quebecer rock band will perform at noon, a camping ground, the community centre and a great skatepark called Extreme Zone, where athletes will show BMX, rollerblades and skateboard tricks up to evening.
The program of the day is developed upon this theme, while focusing on the event’s initial objective: to promote the eco-responsible and economical modes of transportation available to citizens of the metropolitan area.
In town, without my car! day is organized by the AMT in collaboration with the city of Montréal, the Québec government and many partners and sponsors from various fields. They are all sharing one goal which is to promote public transit.
