European Mobility Week 2009 in Zagreb
The City of Zagreb will mark this year’s Mobility Week named Improving City Climates with an array of activities at different locations in the city, but the Bundek Lake area will be the centre of interest.

Through a variety of everyday activities, we want to send a clear message to the citizens about Bundek’s unfailing beauty, health and functionality, which is summarised in the title “Bundek – Green College” . In 2005, the City of Zagreb redecorated this previously inaccessible and derelict area which is located in the wider city centre. It includes two 4.5 hectare lakes with facilities for sports, health-recreation and educational activities.

The main activity of the Week’s celebration will be a press conference at Bundek, where the mayor and his associates will present the activities’ programme for the Week to the public. Given that September 16 was proclaimed the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, we have organised health examinations and counselling on protection from harmful radiation. Weight, blood sugar and cholesterol, EEG, spirometry, etc., will be measured. At the same time, producers of natural cosmetics and preparations for skin and respiratory tract protection will set up booths in order to present their products.

Over 61.000 pupils will attend classes about climate changes and EMW organised in 126 schools. The following day will be dedicated to sustainable traffic and the promotion of public and alternative transportation. Newly furnished tram stations in the city centre will be opened as educational info – spots (as part of the Civitas Project). The Zagreb Municipal Transit System, the city’s public transportation, will present the new system of registering passengers – e-ticketing.

Projects on the sustainable development of traffic within the MAKE CARS GREEN Campaign will be presented at a conference organised by the Croatian Automobile Club, UNDP and the City of Zagreb. The importance of observing traffic regulations, which prioritises public transportation, such as “yellow lanes”, will be demonstrated at many locations. Kindergarten children will visit their peers from other parts of the city by tram, and this ride will be the first tram ride for many of them.

Friday, September 18, is reserved for a sustainable living festival on the main city square where more than forty booths will be set up to present and sell ecological products (food and medicinal products, eco-diapers). Room will also be given to clean and healthy vehicles (such as electric bicycles).

Children will draw features of Mobility Week on linen and paper bags and sell them to the townspeople.

Sports and Recreation Day will be organised on Saturday, September 20, and the URBAN CHALLENGE race will be organised throughout the entire city area.

The following day is reserved for the presentation and demonstration of the new waste sorting project, and traffic will be closed on September 22 in most of the city.

The start of the traditional bicycle race will be in the city centre and will head towards Bundek where Mobility Week will officially end.

Children and youths will be educated on a daily basis at locations where the air quality, temperature and allergen content will be measured. As part of The Little Teach Adults Project, kindergarten children will hold lectures on mobility and climate changes at retirement homes. Visits to permaculture centres and plant nurseries, as well as education on the importance of expanding the green areas will be organised. Several educational institutions will replace old light bulbs with energy saving eco light bulbs.

The City of Zagreb provided organisational help for 60 Croatian cities in order to join EMW.
