European Mobility Week 2009 in Brussels
Brussels is inviting its residents and visitors to explore another kind of mobility this year.

Every day of the week will be dedicated to a specific theme: a different take on the car (16/9), public transport (17/9), bicycles (18/9), sharing the road (19/9), pedestrians (21/9) and so forth. This is an opportunity to discover various approaches to car-sharing or car-pooling, attend free concerts in public transport stops and stations, participate in Fridaybikeday or enjoy a free breakfast offered to cyclists.

And, for the second consecutive year, the capital of Europe is making its own contribution to the European Car Free Day, on 22 September 2009. The Brussels-Capital Region is inviting all schools and businesses which have submitted a mobility plan to encourage their pupils and/or staff to try alternative forms of transport on Tuesday 22 September. A total of 31 companies (52500 staff) and 26 schools (9500 pupils) are taking part in the ‘To school / to work – without my car’ initiative. Options showcased include walking, cycling, public transport and car-pooling.

On 20 September, the Brussels-Capital Region will again devote its 160 km2 to soft forms of transport as part of the traditional Car Free Sunday. There will be plenty of activities and entertainment, but first and foremost this is an opportunity to meet up with friends and relatives to visit and experience a city with fewer cars, less noise, and less pollution!

In addition to the Heritage Days, a vast range of events and special features will be organised throughout the city, including Bruxelles Champêtre, Le Beau Vélo de Ravel as well as walking and cycling tours. The ‘My village in the city’ events initiated by the Brussels-Capital Region on symbolic squares in 10 communes, such as Etterbeek’s Place Jourdan or the Place de la Vaillance in Anderlecht, will provide an ideal setting to socialise and join in the fun with a full programme of activities dedicated to transport and sustainable development. Ample encouragement for a switch to another kind of mobility.
