In cooperation with its partners, the Municipality of Bratislava has prepared a number of permanent measures as well as accompanying events whose aim is to raise the environmental awareness of the citizens of Bratislava and change their behavioral patterns. The capital city of Bratislava is also entering the European Mobility Week Award competition. Last year’s winner was Budapest, also awarded were the cities of Zagreb and Almada.
The most significant change will be that of the conversion of the bidirectional Viedenska roadway to a unidirectional one as of 9/23/09. During the EMW workdays, volunteers and municipality officers will regulate the traffic on pedestrian crossings near elementary schools between 7.15 and 8.00 AM and also between 12 and 1:30 PM. The Municipality of Bratislava is also preparing a project of traffic regulation by launching “Zone 30” – a zone with a speed limit of 30kph and with unidirectional streets. During the European Mobility Week, new bicycle lanes on Antolská Street and Devínska Road will be put to use.
During the Car Free Day event, the City’s Local Transport Authority (DPB, a. s.) will offer free public transport to all users. The Local Transport Authority also launches a new line (No 36) as of 10/1/09, which will operate in the new area of Polianky. DPB, a. s., operates 14 school lines, with the latest being opened in June. Another important project worth mentioning is the tender for purchasing articulated, low floor busses.
In the year 2007 Bratislava signed the European Road Safety Charter whose aim is to halve the death rate on our roads by 2010. Relevant permanent measures include:
- new traffic lights at pedestrian crossings: Hraničiarov Square, Pražská Street and Gagarinova Street,
- new additional illuminations at 8 pedestrian crossings
- colour contrast for pedestrian crossings near schools and highlighted road signs
During the EMW the project of “flashing green” will continue at 9 chosen traffic-lights intersections.
In cooperation with the Pontis foundation and their links with the private sector within the Business Leaders´ Forum (BLF), whose members are prominent Bratislava companies employing about 50.000 people, an initiative for the employers of these companies to commute by any other means of transport than their car, or to use a car sharing/car pooling system, will take place.
During this year’s EMW, presentations and discussions will take place as well. Their topics will include the backbone transport system in Bratislava, transport planning and the expected influence of major projects on transport and also the development of bicycle lanes in our city. The atmosphere of EMW will be enhanced by sports and recreation activities on Partizánska Lúka and by the first year of the Bratislava Night Run on September 19. On the following day traffic education for young children will take place on Primatial Square. In both places special journeys in the “city exhibition trains” will be provided for seniors. On the evening of September 22 “a closing season ride” of roller-skaters and cyclists (Bratislava-inline) will also take place.

- establishment of new parameters in the city transport, e. g. for disabled people
