European Mobility Week 2009 in Rome
“Waiting for the EMW”

Province of Rome has stuck, in 2009, to an European Project, called “Move Together”, that promotes a new culture of mobility with the contribution of public administrations and citizens. The intentions of the initiative is convincing citizens and administrations to become more responsible in defending the environment through better choices in theme of sustainable mobility. From 7th to 14th of September we’re going to organize a show of the project, in which we will be also introduce a specific project, made by one of the citizens that had participated to “Move Together”, on an example of intermodality in public transport.

This year, Province of Rome patronizes the event called “Bicistaffetta” organised by Ruotalibera – FIAB Roma, Ostia in Bici and NaturAmici. Every year, “Bicistaffetta” identifies tourist runs, and promotes the use of the bicycle, that emphasizes the beauty of the surrounding environment. The event is going to start on 8th until 12th of September. On 4th of September we’re going to have a press conference in Palazzo Valentini.


The Activities of the Province of Rome during the European Mobility Week (EMW)

  • Opening, during the week, of a counter of consultation held by the Mobility Manager of the Province, for the cities of the Province of Rome, to plan together a mobility “environment-friendly” for the employees of local administrations
  • Organization of an event based on a new culture of mobility, located in a town of the Province, by closing a road or a square for a meeting with some writers that have described the trip, the move, the use and the knowledge of a way to move by train or by bicycle being used, rediscovering the pleasure to observe the places and appreciating the local identities. The event could foresee the reading of passages drawn by some books and artistic moments.
  • Organization of an excursion for impassioned bicyclists in one of the natural reserves of the province of Roma, with tasting of local typical products.
  • Organization of a conference that closes the week, based on the comparison of the politics of sustainable mobility in different European
  • Organizations of “A day without my car”, involving the countries of the province through the closing to the traffic of an urban area and the organization of musical events and games, particularly turned the children.

Permanent Measures initated by the Province of Rome:

Level Crossing’s deletion

From 2009 to 2011, Province of Rome will remove 11 level crossing located in Lazio Region’s railway lines with an investment of 11 million euros. On the 2nd of april 2009 Province of Rome, Lazio Region and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana have been signed a deal. This project will affect 4 railway lines: FR2 Roma-Pescara, FR3 Roma-Viterbo, FR4 Roma-Velletri and FR8 Roma. The opening of the first sites (yard) will be provided for september 2009. this is an important goal that attests the concrete commitment of the President Zingaretti to improve the commuter’s life quality.

Mobility Corridors

In the triennium 2009-2011 Province of Rome will build 4 mobility corridors (in a total of 11 planned by the provincial planning) with a total investment of 151 million euros, of which 31,5 million euros from Province of Rome and the remaining from public and private investitors. Mobility corridors are streets dedicated to local public transport and their goals are to speeding traffic, to reduce gas emissions and to improve the quality of life for commuters.

Parking spaces for exchange

Province of Rome will create 26 parking lots in exchange for a total of 3,400 cars. This project encourages the commuters to leave their car and take the public transports.

Cycling

Province of Rome promotes the use of bicycles by the closure to traffic of the towns historic centers and by the promotion of provincial nature reserves. Province of Rome has handed 30 stalls for bikes to Ente Eur, to make the ‘Colombo’ bike path more usable. It is also provided the realization of stalls for bikes in the parking spaces for exchange in progress and in the railway stations. Province of Rome will include bicycle lanes to provincial roads in progress, putting in horizontal and vertical street signs. There are also investments for some cycleways, such as the bike path around Bracciano Lake and the Tolfa-Allumiere cycleway.

Amico Bus

Also for 2009, Province of Rome offers the first transportation service by call-reservation for disabled people resident in the province’s area. The buses are appropriately equipped to accommodate disabled people, even in a wheelchair, and allow them to claim, to travel, and get off easily and safely.

European Car Free Day in the Province of Rome

The initiative "A day without my car" will take place in numerous towns in the Province of Rome during the European Mobility Week. Some of them are ALLUMIERE, ANGUILLARA SABAZIA, BRACCIANO, CIAMPINO, LADISPOLI, MONTECOMPATRI, RIANO etc.
