Facebook users take a virtual ride with Travel Together Campaign
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) supported Travel Together Campaign aims to change the behaviour of travellers and commuters, triggering new habits for a greener Europe.
The campaign is using social media to spread its message and has developed a web application in which the facebook avatars of those who have pledged to take sustainable transport appear together on a green, futuristic vehicle. This allows users to virtually share a journey with friends and reinforces the campaign message that when you travel with others, you take an active part in a greener economy.
Users can also take a virtual animal of their choice with them. Those who convince other facebook users to sign up to the campaign enter the campaign competition in which free tickets can be won.
Dozens of train, metro, bus, and carpooling companies across the continent are supporting the campaign. With the the UN Conference on Sustainable Development “Rio+20” ongoing, the European transport sector are calling on citizens to support the transition to a new economic model.
