It is valid for a given time (about one hour) and a determined place, generally speaking the whole of the district and its near periphery, that is to say several kilometres. For very regular use, such as an identical return journey five days out of seven, season ticket systems enable the cost of the journey to be reduced further whereas by car the expense remains the same. For the suburbs of large towns, public transport (RER, S-Bahn, etc.) carries suburban dwellers to the town centre, with a more frequent service at peak times.
In Europe, a 100 km interurban train journey costs between 10 and 20 Euros, depending on the country. Various reductions are possible, by taking into account the period of the journey, the number of travellers, etc.
Transport companies generally increase their offers of reduction, by season tickets or promotional schedules whereas the costs of a private car do not vary in accordance with the season or age of the driver!
