Carrying out a Car-Free Day event by closing one or more streets to traffic, and opening it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. This should preferably happen on 22 September to mark your town or city as part of World Car-Free Day.
Implementing one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.
Permanent measures implemented this year:
New or improved bicycle facilities
  • Improvement of bicycle network (creation of new lanes, extension, renovation, signposting etc)
  • Develop public bicycle hiring and sharing systems
  • Improvement of bicycle facilities (parking, locks etc)
  • Other: Fitting-rooms for cyclists at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Bakırköy Building and at Istanbul Bicycle Association Building
Pedestrianisation
  • Create or enlarge pedestrian streets
  • Improvement of infrastructure (new foot bridges, pavements, road crossings, zebra crossings etc)
  • Extension or creation of new greenways
Public transport services
  • Improvement and extension of the public transport network (creation of HOV lanes for public transport modes, new stops, new lines, reserved areas etc)
  • Development of new technologies to improve public transport
  • Launch of integrated services for the various public transport modes
  • The development of accessible transport services for all
  • Other: A training program was started to train all public transport drivers in Istanbul so that they become aware of environmental conditions caused by their driving behaviours.

  • Other: Climate Change Trainings for municipality's staff was performed by IMM. Climate Change Action Plan for Istanbul was completed. A shuttle bus service was put into service by IMM between Bakırköy Buildi
