Gävle, Sweden, wins European Mobility Week Award!
Gävle has won the 2009 European Mobility Week Award. The Swedish coastal city was judged by an independent panel of experts to have done the most to promote clean mobility initiatives during European Mobility Week 2009. León in Spain and the Croatian city of Ivanić-Grad were runners-up. The awards were presented by Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik at a ceremony in Brussels last night.

Since 2001, the City of Helsinki in Finland offered its citizens the chance to buy public transport tickets by sending a text message (SMS) from their mobile phone. Since then, the use of the mobile phone tickets has expanded to cover most means of public transport in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, except for certain bus lines. The purchase of tickets was simplified during the ‘In Town Without My Car’ day in 2006.

Gävle, Sweden, wins European Mobility Week Award!
Gävle has won the 2009 European Mobility Week Award. The Swedish coastal city was judged by an independent panel of experts to have done the most to promote clean mobility initiatives during European Mobility Week 2009. As regards to the statement approved from the Town Council on 3rd August 2007, the Town of Rome in Italy expresses its formal adhesion to the European Week without cars: All the Municipalities have been invited to participate with their own initiatives, in particular fostering the pedestrianisation of streets or significant street areas, according to the establishement of future permanent car-free areas.

The City of Évora in Portugal launched the project “Safe Commuting to school” during European Mobility Week. This project will be developed along the full school year, involving as sociations, police and the whole school community in general, with the objective to discuss home-school mobility plans for each school individually.

The Environmental Protection Office in Ljubljana in Slovenia monitored the results of the annual European Mobility Week and determined that short-term measures were not reaching the desired results of reducing pollution or congestion. HELSINKI: Innovative technologies to purchase public transport tickets
Since 2001, the City of Helsinki in Finland offered its citizens the chance to buy public transport tickets by sending a text message (SMS) from their mobile phone. Since then, the use of the mobile phone tickets has expanded to cover most means of public transport in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, except for certain bus lines. The purchase of tickets was simplified during the ‘In Town Without My Car’ day in 2006.
