Three finalists to the European Mobility Week Award!

From 16 to 22 September 2011, a record 2,268 European towns and cities officially participated in the tenth annual edition of European Mobility Week (EMW) and invited their citizens to a wide range of activities promoting sustainable urban mobility. The 2011 campaign theme – “Alternative Mobility” - aimed at supporting the transition towards a resource-efficient transport system by promoting clean, fuel-efficient modes and human-powered transport. All participating local authorities complying with the criteria of the European Mobility Week Charter were invited to apply for the European Mobility Week Award 2011.

Almada wins European Mobility Week Award 2010

The Portuguese city of Almada has won the 2010 European Mobility Week Award. Almada was judged by an independent panel of mobility experts to have done the most to promote alternatives to the car, and to highlight the positive impact of other means of transport on public health and the environment during European Mobility Week 2010. Murcia in Spain and the Latvian capital Riga were runners-up. The awards were presented by Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik at a ceremony in Brussels on 14 March 2011.

The 2010 campaign theme – “Travel Smarter, Live Better” – was selected as the focal theme in recognition of the detrimental effects that current urban transportation trends have on health, both for citizens and for the towns and cities in which they live. All participating local authorities complying with the criteria of the European Mobility Week Charter were invited to apply for the European Mobility Week Award 2010.

ÉVORA: Safe commuting to school

The City of Évora in Portugal launched the project “Safe Commuting to school” during European Mobility Week. This project will be developed along the full school year, involving as sociations, police and the whole school community in general, with the objective to discuss home-school mobility plans for each school individually.

ELBLAG: Modernising public transport in a more comfortable and ecological way

LJUBLJANA: Using alternative fuel for city buses

HELSINKI: Innovative technologies to purchase public transport tickets

Since 2001, the City of Helsinki in Finland offered its citizens the chance to buy public transport tickets by sending a text message (SMS) from their mobile phone. Since then, the use of the mobile phone tickets has expanded to cover most means of public transport in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, except for certain bus lines. The purchase of tickets was simplified during the ‘In Town Without My Car’ day in 2006.
